Hello all, I'm Brandon and am 1st relating myself to Jem Atticus Finch, we are both alike & different, as with most people, I have many similarities and differences......................
Age-wise, we are both kids but I am a little older, and remained older until the very end of the book. We are both kids, and act immature sometimes, but it seemed like Jem became extremely mature for his age towards the end of the book, whether from his environment, and upbringing or just how he is. He might even be more civilized than me, although I”m plenty mature for my age. Well, we both attend school, and while he likes to play football, I like to play “Futbol”. Our personal relationship with family is similar, while I might disagree with my family, I can maintain a good family bond. I think my parents are less watchful than Atticus, or Calpurnia, but I usually wouldn't make trouble. While I may not want to be a lawyer when I grow up, I want to make a reasonable amount of money & be successful just like everybody else, including Jem.
Mothers are an integral part of a family, they are able to do many things fathers are seldom good at..............
I think Jem & Scout's childhood may have been cheated, somewhat by the absence of a mother. However, that's where Calpurnia comes in. I think she may have been a decent substitution for a mother, for she treated the kids as her own. Calpurnia does basically what a mother does, taking care of the kids. When Scout was disrespectful to Walter, Calpurnia gave a motherly lecture.
While having Calpurnia as a “mother” may seem great, its not the same as a real mother. Jem remembered their mother, and although she died, he still missed her. The kids probably wouldn't have gotten in as much trouble, with Boo Radley & all if a real mother was watching over them. Also the whole issue with Aunt A, instilling “feminism” would not have come up. The kids would not have came to the black church, if they had a white mother. They also would be unused to black people. Whether for good or bad, Scout & Jem were cheated of a mother, but given 2 unique feminine influences, Aunt A & Calpurnia, who molded them into who they are.
