LORD OF THE FLIES
A GIFT FOR THE DARKNESS
WILLIAM GOLDING
OVERVIEW OF EVENTS
This chapter, ( A GIFT FOR THE DARKNESS) is perhaps one of the most disturbing chapters in fiction. Out of all the strange things in this chapter, I believe that the most troubling part of this chapter is one of these two happenings. Either when Jack and his group of boys slaughter, paunch the pig and use its head as a gift for the darkness.
Or when Simon imagines the pig actually talking to him. The part when the group of boys slaughter the pig is at first disturbing when they kill and paunch it, but it gets even more worse when they put its head on the stick, creating the demoniac figure, known as the Lord of The Flies. When Jack, the savage prefect of his small group of boys saw a large female pig, they desired to kill it and leave its head as an offering for the “beast”. They of course didn't know that I would be creating a fiendish figurehead of evil.
Once they saw the huge pig they attacked it, wounding it. Although the pig escaped they followed the trail of blood and chased it until they found it again, and killed it. After Jack paunched the pig, Jack ordered the sharpest spear to pierce the head of the pig, creating a lord of the flies. Of course Jack was very demure of his creation. Now this event if very disturbing for obvious reasons.
But perhaps the next horrific event is even worse.........
Simon was there when they mercilessly killed the pig. Then he began to imagine that the pig's head on the stick was actually talking to him. That by itself is disturbing, but the next part is even worse, the “beast” told him that he wasn’t something to fight to hunt or kill, but something worse.
The lord of the flies said that he was very near to Simeon, which can be inferred that he was something that Siemon had already seen. To put it in the simplest terms, the beast was not a visible enemy, but something every human has, the darker part of human nature which is buried under the surface. The true beast was the inner evil the taboo, of all humanity. That was what this part of the chapter was trying to convey. This was the beast that Golding was trying to explain in this chapter.
