LORD OF THE FLIES
Chapter 7
Shadows and Tall Trees
Jack’s Adventure
I have noticed many bad things about Ralph. He's beginning to believe that we should do everything that he wants just because he's leader. He believes that he can command my hunters. Ralph doesn't hunt, he never helps us hunting, and he only played a hunting game once! I think I'm more deserving of leader than Ralph! After we attacked the boar (Ralph speared it, but he should have grabbed it like I did) we played a game where we role played the scene. Robert was the pig, and we pretended to hunt him. At my command, we made a ring to trap him, and then pretended to kill him, while singing our chant. The mood was upbeat and happy because it was really fun. It was a game, it was funnier than rugger.
After the fun game, I made a joke suggesting that we use a little one and actually kill him. It was only a joke; I don't think I would actually do that. I believe this foreshadows that we will have more exciting, and maybe bloody rituals in the future, I don’t really care though. A boy with a mulberry birthmark was the first person to mention a beast, some kid said he saw the beastie in the dark, but it was only Simon. Percival said he saw the beast, later Sam and Eric said they were chased by it, but I didn’t believe any of them, until I actually saw it. When I saw it I was terrified, it just stared at us, and it was impervious. Well they are gullible because they are children; they don’t really know all the animals in the world. And they think they have a lot of evidence, I’m sure there must be a real beast.
Now the person I hate the most is Piggy, because he is fat, he is annoying, and he has problems. Piggy also talks very sagely, like he thinks he’s actually smart. The next person I hate the most is Ralph! He thinks he’s better than me! Ralph thinks his ideas are more important than hunting; I could care less about being rescued. He can go eat brine for all I care! By that I mean he thinks he’s more capable of leader. I’m kind of jealous that he’s leader. Next he doesn’t hunt, he doesn’t catch his own pigs, and all he does is he runs around barking orders. And he also has false bravado! I’m pretty sure I would be a better leader! Ralph makes me windy.
